Alterations done by Brides Mother

Alterations done by Brides Mother

When this bride called to make an appointment to try on some dresses, she asked if it would be fine for her to bring along her dressmaker mother. I replied "of course!" because I wasn’t sure why she would think that would be a problem - but apparently the last bridal shop they went to felt uncomfortable when they found out her mother’s trade.

I explained that I actually loved it when there is a dressmaker at the appointment, because they are able to understand the alteration suggestions I am making and I can explain why bridal dresses are made the way they are, and how these design details work together to create a certain ‘fit’.

When they came to the appointment, the daughter laughed and said "Listen to you two! It’s like two peas in a pod.”
This is a photo of the bride’s mother pinning the alterations so that she could complete them at home. I can’t help myself and I started pinning up the hem…I stopped and apologised for taking over, however she replied that she would love for me to show her how to do the alterations. I explained how I would adjust this particular dress, and how some techniques for bridal dresses were different to regular dressmaking.
At the end of the appointment, I told her to call me if she got stuck with anything.
