Bad Alterations

Bad Alterations

A couple of weeks ago I had a phone call from a bride crying down the phone telling me that her dress had been hacked and she was getting married the following week. While I do have a policy that I don't alter dresses that aren't purchased from my boutique, I didn't have the heart not to help and I knew the bride wouldn't sleep til she came in.

She arrived half an hour later with red eyes sore from crying so much. My heart went out to her as I had a look at the dress once she tried it on - a twisted hem, gathered lace, underlay showing, two holes in the bottom of the dress... I was able to guess the dressmaker as a lot of this work has come my way. It seemed to me the alterations had been rushed, but I promised I would do the best I could. As you can see from the photos, the hem is not to my standards.

Please, do your research before you trust your dress in the hands of somebody to be altered. You have every right to ask how it would be finished, what the credentials are of the dressmaker and at the very least, look for testimonials from previous brides. The price of the alterations were quite cheap, but you do get what you pay for and in the end the stress it caused is not worth it.
