When the Sample Dress Doesn't Fit: The Jessica's Willow Story
When the Sample Gown Doesn’t Fit: Jessica’s Willow Story
One of the hardest parts of wedding dress shopping is falling in love with a gown you cannot properly try on.
Boutiques can only carry each sample gown in one size, and sometimes the dress that perfectly describes a bride’s vision is simply not available in her size to try. This is where experience, trust and a little imagination can make all the difference.
Jessica visited us earlier this year looking for something soft and whimsical. She imagined beautiful blouson sleeves and a gown that felt romantic and effortless.
As she described what she wanted, I immediately thought of Willow by Pollardi. The only difficulty was that our Willow sample was a size that meant there was no way for her to try on our sample and see how it would look on her—but I had previously ordered Willow for another bride in a larger size, so I understood how beautifully the design translated into a fuller size.
I talked Jessica through every detail and explained the changes I believed would make Willow perfect for her.
Because the gown features a sheer illusion back with lace detailing, covered buttons and loops, I asked Pollardi to add additional lace to the back so Jessica would feel comfortable and secure. For gowns over a certain size, I also ask Pollardi to add extra boning through the bodice for greater structure and support.
Pollardi created an internal lace-up corset as well. This was made in nude so it remained hidden underneath the gown, but it gave Jessica additional support, cinched the waist and beautifully shaped the bust and waistline.
We also made a small change to Willow’s blouson sleeves. The original design finished with a frill at the wrist, but I asked Pollardi to replace it with a fitted cuff. Narrowing the sleeve at the wrist gave the arm more definition and created a much more flattering overall shape.
It was understandably a lot for Jessica to take in. She lived five hours away, she could not try the gown on in her size, and she had to imagine how all these changes would come together.
Jessica said to me, “I feel like I really trust what you’re saying and believe in what you’re talking about.”
I told her honestly, “I truly believe this gown will be perfect for you—but I also understand that you don’t know me yet. I know what I can do as a seamstress, but I want you to sleep on it overnight and feel completely comfortable with your decision.”
On Monday, Jessica called and said, “Connie, I’m going to go with it.”
I was so happy for her because I genuinely believed Willow was her dress—and when it arrived, it was beautiful on her.
Very few alterations were needed. We lifted the shoulders slightly because Jessica’s bust volume was smaller than the gown’s standard proportions, and we shortened the hem. Apart from those minor adjustments, the gown fitted remarkably well.
Jessica’s story is a lovely reminder that if a sample gown does not fit you in the boutique, it does not necessarily mean it is not the right dress for you.
Sometimes you need someone who can look beyond the sample size, understand construction and fit, communicate directly with the designer, and help you visualise what the finished gown can become.
If I show you a gown that you cannot properly try on, I will never expect you to make a rushed decision. I will talk you through every detail, explain what can be changed and give you honest advice based on my many years of dressmaking and bridal experience.
Sometimes, with a little imagination and trust, the gown you cannot try on may turn out to be the gown that was meant for you.
