I had a bride in on Saturday to show her best friend the dress she fell in love with just a few days before. Her best friend loved the dress too! The brides were commenting on how well the dress fits and how little alterations it would need because I would be measuring waist to hem length and the designer will cut to that length. This means I'd only need to run in a little at waist.
My brides friend who got married just a few months ago was really surprised at this,as she had paid $800 for the alterations to her gown.I'm pretty sure my mouth dropped and just looked at her in shock. My curiosity got the better of me and asked what the seamstress had done to rack up that amount in alterations. For $800 my brides's friend had her dress hemmed, shoulder straps altered and had the dress run in at side seams. "WOW!" Was all I could say. I've charged $800 before but for a complete redesign on a gown, hems, side seams, fixing the belt and beading, etc.. I think I can count maybe 3 alterations in my lifetime as a seamstress that it's ever cost a bride $800 for alterations or close to it.
My question to you is, has anyone else had alterations so expensive / would be willing to pay that much? In my opinion $800 is way too expensive and very unfair for the work completed, but would love to hear your stories.
