Getting your dress made, Be warned and be smart!

I had a bride email me for an appointment, saying that she’d had her dress made and it had been a disaster - an ‘unfixable disaster’, and she was after a new dress.
With her wedding date just three weeks away, she came in to me the very next day. When she came in she explained what was wrong with the dress, from this description I was able to guess exactly who the dressmaker was as I’d seen the same issues beforehand.
I’m sharing this story not to shame any dressmakers but to help anybody looking to get a dress made to be wise and cautious. My top tips are:
- Check the website – see how the dress is fitting the brides in the pictures.
- Check recommendations and testimonials.
- Check qualifications – when I was doing made to measure I had my TAFE qualifications on the wall so people knew what I was able to do.
- Get it on paper – I used to have a signing system so that every time a bride came for her fitting, I wrote down what I was doing with adjustments to the dress and we both signed. This way it was clear and understood.
My bride has walked away with a new gown that she’s picking up today. Exactly what she was looking for and in her size… but the happy ending shouldn’t have to have the story before it!
