Hello, Future Brides. Last week I had an appointment with a new bridal client, who broke the news that she was getting married in only 13 weeks! I immediately explained to her that she would need to buy off the rack, as there was no way I could order in a new dress for her in that short time. The bride explained that losing weight had been her goal, and that she had left dress buying until the last minute because she wanted to make sure she could lose as much weight as possible.
She tried on a number of dresses, but her weight was still a key point of every discussion: would losing more weight change the overall shape of the
dress? How much could I run it in? If she bought the same dress two sizes smaller, how many kilos would she need to lose to fit it?
After trying on a wide range of options, I decided to be upfront, and said to her that I didn’t think I would be able to sell her a dress that day
- her weight was more important to her than the dress, and until she was happy with her weight no dress was going to be ‘right’. She replied, ‘You
get it! To me, my weight is more important. I am not happy with the weight I am, and I want the time to lose as much as I can.’ I suggested that
she return to buy the dress just three weeks before the wedding, and we will work with whatever size she is then. I knew she wasn’t ready to buy
her dress yet.
She assured me she would be back, as she knew I would look after her but, regardless of this, I would prefer to forego a sale than know I am selling
a bride a dress that is not right.
